Engineering and Pattern Tooling
We find the problems before they happen. Your print is reviewed and the pattern is designed around it before tooling is built. You'll hear back within one business day.
- 01 Shrink allowance Built into every dimension for the metal being poured
- 02 Draft On every wall that pulls from the sand
- 03 Core prints Locate and hold the cores in the mold
- 04 Parting line Set for the molding process and the machining datums
- 60+ Years in business
- ISO 9001 2015 certified
- Up to 3,000 lb Casting weight
- No minimum Prototype to repeat
What we check on every print
These are the first things we look at, before tooling is built, because they are where casting problems start.
- DRAFT · WALLS
Draft and wall changes
Walls with no draft and sudden thick-to-thin changes cause trouble in the sand and in the metal. We look for them before tooling is built.
- PARTING LINE
Where the mold splits
The parting line decides draft, cores and where flash ends up. We set it for the molding process and the faces that get machined.
- DATUMS
Datums and the parting line
A datum on the parting line or a cored surface is hard to hold and measure. We check datums against the pattern design.
- STOCK
Machining stock
Machined faces and bores need enough stock to clean up. We plan it into the pattern before tooling.
- TESTING
Print notes that add cost
X-ray, pressure testing, PPAP and other print notes add cost and lead time. We list them on the quote.
- FIT
If your part isn't a good fit, we'll tell you quickly.
You get a straight answer before anyone spends time on a quote.
Pattern tooling
Designed and built around your part, its quantity and the foundry running it. Controlled by us for the life of the program.
| Tooling types | Matchplates, cope and drag boards, core boxes, mold boxes |
|---|---|
| Wood | Prototypes and low quantities. Fastest and lowest cost to build and change. |
| Urethane | Production runs. Holds its shape and wears far longer than wood. |
| Aluminum | High volume and long programs, often as matchplates. |
| 3D printed molds | Prototypes and complex cores with no pattern at all. |
| Designed by | Certified pattern makers, with shrink, draft, cores and parting line set for the metal and the molding process. |
| Changes | Print revisions handled on the pattern we built, without starting over. |
| Ownership | Your tooling, built and controlled by us, ready for repeat orders. |
Patterns we've built
Wood, urethane and aluminum tooling for aluminum, iron and steel castings.
CPM Industries has always been available to help when timing matters. Their expertise and skill in producing pattern equipment accurately and on time has been invaluable to me and my company.
